The Benefits of Bamboo

Our search for a comfortable performance fabric wasn’t something we took lightly. We explored for over two years, high and low, near and far, testing fabrics in every environment imaginable, until we came across bamboo fabric. And in bamboo, we found everything we were looking for, and then some.

  • Comfort
The ultra-fine yarn means it feels amazingly soft against your skin.
  • UV Protection
Skip the slimy sunscreen. Free Fly’s bamboo fabric blends provide natural UV protection.
  • Breathable
Bamboo fibers make the fabric blends more breathable than cotton, hemp, wool, and synthetic fabrics.
  • Moisture Wicking
Don’t love clothing that traps moisture in, or worse, sticks to your skin? Neither do we—bamboo to the rescue.
  • Thermal Regulating
Our bamboo fabric blends keep you a few degrees warmer in the colder climes and cooler when it’s warm.
  • Anti-Odor
We build apparel that’s meant to be worn, so this was a biggie for us. Bamboo fibers naturally resist trapping odors.
  • Anti-Itch
Thanks to the smooth structure of its fibers, bamboo fabric blends are soft and non-irritating.
  • Anti-Static
Bamboo fabric blends naturally eliminate the buildup of static electricity.
  • Environmentally Sustainable
No pesticides, efficient upward growth, and no irrigation are just three reasons that make us love bamboo more.

Our Process

  • STEP 1: The soft, inner layer (pith) is removed from the bamboo stalk.
Another sustainable stronghold: Bamboo grows rapidly and can be harvested in 3 – 5 years. It also inhibits soil erosion and rarely needs replanting.
  • STEP 2: The pith is mixed with sodium hydroxide, which is a natural solvent that breaks down the pith and turns it into viscose.
Many companies use carbon disulfide—a harsh, harmful chemical—at this stage. We are not one of those companies.
  • STEP 3: The viscose is then ring spun into fine yarn—the key to giving the end product an ultra-soft hand feel.
We blend the viscose from bamboo with polyester fabric to create the softest performance apparel imaginable. Good thing you don’t have to imagine it.
  • STEP 4: The yarn is knit, dyed, and sewed into a final product.
Free Fly is accepted by the organic textile trade. We care about our customers, the clothes we’re making, and the environment in which we all play.
